Laparoscopic surgery

Feldon VetsL laparoscopic surgeryAt Feldon Veterinary Centre we know that our clients want to give their pets the very best care they can, which is why we are so pleased to be able to offer laparoscopic spays.

Laparoscopic spays can be performed using the same advanced keyhole surgery techniques used in human medicine, meaning we can now make this procedure an even better experience for you and your pet.

What is keyhole surgery?

Keyhole surgery, also known as laparoscopy or minimally invasive surgery, is a gentle alternative to conventional surgery. Keyhole operations can be carried out using very small incisions usually about 5mm diameter through which a camera can be passed and long, slender, surgical instruments can be introduced to perform surgery within the body with maximum precision and minimal trauma.

What are the advantages of a laparoscopic spay?

  • Feldon Vets: laparoscopic woundsSignificant reduction in post-operative pain
  • Quicker and smoother recovery from surgery
  • Much quicker return to normal exercise, most dogs will be back to their normal selves the day after the procedure
  • Fewer wound complications and faster healing
  • Much better visualisation of abdominal structures giving the ability to identify other problems not seen during traditional surgery

Are there any side effects from the procedure?

No, animals do not suffer from side effects such as post operative shoulder pain associated with laparoscopic surgery in humans.

Are keyhole procedures covered by pet insurance?

Yes, in the majority of cases the costs of laparoscopic surgery will be covered by your pet insurance policy. However, routine neutering is not covered by most insurance policies whether it is done laparoscopically or using traditional surgical methods. It is always best to check individual policy details if you are unsure.

What do other pet owners say about laparoscopic spays?

‘Pippa’s recovery from the laparoscopic speying process was seemingly amazing. She showed no signs of discomfort whatsoever and was able to resume her normal “100 mile an hour existence” with almost immediate effect.

The two incisions were tiny and after a couple of initial inquisitive “licks”, Pippa did not appear to notice them.

We would wholeheartedly recommend the process and are enormously grateful to the team of vets… who provided such a professional, caring service/follow-on care. ‘
Christine and Colin Grafton

When else might laparoscopic surgery be used?

Keyhole surgery is ideally suited to organ biopsies, removal of abdominal testicles and removal of some tumours. Performing these procedures using minimally invasive techniques carries the same advantages of much reduced post-operative pain and a quicker return to normal function. It is often necessary to perform diagnostic surgical procedures on already ill animals and the use of keyhole techniques means these operations can be made shorter and less risky. Many patients that would originally have needed hospitalisation can return home to their owners on the same day and get back to normal life within a few days.
