Career opportunities: A career as a veterinary receptionist

Veterinary receptionists are often the first member of the veterinary team a new or existing client talks to on the telephone or sees when they visit their veterinary practice.

The veterinary receptionist is therefore instrumental in creating the first impression in relation to the veterinary practice.

Skills required

  • Be able to work as a team member
  • Be able to work under pressure
  • A good communicator
  • Be able to multi-task effectively
  • Plenty of common sense

To become a veterinary receptionist

There are currently no formal qualifications required to become a veterinary receptionist as the veterinary practice provides in-house training, however previous reception or administration and telephone experience is very useful.

The reception area can become a very busy and stressful environment so good people and organisational skills are of most importance.

Most practices are computerised so good IT/typing skills are also required.

Unlike most reception jobs, working in the veterinary practice requires a wide range of interpersonal skills, clients may require support if their pet is unwell and reassurance their pet is receiving high levels of medical care and attention.

A complete understanding of practice policies is a must to ensure efficiency and high standards of client care.

Once employed within a veterinary practice external companies are now offering recognised veterinary receptionist certificates and qualifications.

Feldon employs both full time and part time receptionists.
