Meet Sam. Sam is a tortoise with a story to tell.
Sam was hibernating as usual in her owners garage when she suffered a slight mishap. She appeared to have slipped from her shelf and suffered trauma to her shell.
Sam was brought to vet Viv at our Leamington branch where we took X-rays to establish the extent of her injuries.
The radiographs showed that she had extensive fractures to her shell which needed to be stabilised. Viv cleaned the fractures and then created a synthetic shell which he placed on Sam to allow healing of the actual shell to take place. This cast was glued in place and Sam was given a course of antibiotics to prevent infection. Sam’s owners were advised that this type of injury could take some time to heal.
We saw Sam periodically to ensure that all was well and she was managing with the cast in place and behaving as normal. After six months the cracks were healing well and Sam was putting weight on and growing as expected. Viv was happy to allow her to hibernate again that winter and re-examine her in the spring.
Happily, Sam came back to us recently to have the cast removed and she can now return to normal tortoise life. Her owners were very pleased that all’s well that ends well and have ensured that her hibernation place is as safe as can be. In the meantime, Sam has been enjoying the rest of her summer in the garden.
