Working with national charity Pet Blood Bank, we are holding our next blood donation session on Sunday 15th October at our surgery in Leamington.
Like humans, dogs have different blood types and supplies of one type, DEA 1 negative, are running low. Breeds of dog which tend to have this blood type are Dobermanns, Greyhounds, Boxers, German Shepherds, Flat-Coated Retrievers, Airedale Terriers, Weimaraners, Lurchers, American Bulldogs, English Pointers and English Bull Terriers, so we are particularly appealing to owners of these breeds to come forward to help.
Dogs like Larry above can save up to four dogs’ lives with just one unit of blood. Larry is a true superstar as when his owner adopted him from a local dog rescue he was really quite timid and worried; he didn’t like his personal space being invaded and didn’t really like being touched or stroked. But with lots of patience and TLC his owner finally broke down the barriers and he learned to trust her and came to enjoy being fussed and stroked. Larry and his owner came along to a donation session but his owner didn’t really think he would be suitable and would be concerned about the level of interaction required in the process, but Larry excelled himself and was able to donate on the day.
So if you think that your dog hasn’t got the right temperament to donate then think again, as Larry has proven that every dog does indeed have his day. There are lots of occasions when dogs come along to a session and can’t donate so there is no harm in registering your dog; if they are worried then we don’t proceed as your dog’s welfare is our primary concern. The more dogs we have registered to donate, the better. Give us a call on 01926 423161 to register or visit Pet Blood Bank for more information.
We look forward to seeing you soon.
